Society bombards us with expectations around motherhood that many times are not realistic or even natural, especially around sleep!
What if we didn't enter motherhood with the preconception that the baby needs a separate crib?
Or without the idea that a baby "should" sleep through the night by a certain age?
Or the idea that babies cry to manipulate us?
Or that we're doing something wrong by holding our little ones for hours and responding to them at night?
These are all things I heard and was told during pregnancy, after my daughter was born, and we're all bombarded with it in our culture...
In the movies, we see babies neatly swaddled and sleeping alone...
Commercials of moms enjoying their hot coffee while baby is rocked in the newest gadget...
Social media posts of moms picking up new hobbies with all the time they have while baby sleeps...
Some moms have that experience... and many moms including myself did not and will not.
We have babies, toddlers, and young children who want to be held and played with non-stop...
Who won't sleep unless they're held or nursed to sleep...
Who will wake up the second you try to transfer them to the crib...
Or they wake frequently all night wanting comfort...
I want you to know that you're not doing anything wrong and that you are an amazing mom!!
Our society has been shaping our beliefs around babies and sleep based on so-called "experts" from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
