Take a moment to send love with us to all those affected by the war 🙏 💕
When we experience a traumatic event (Big T trauma) like war, a natural disaster, a car accident, or assault, our body enters the flight or flight state (or freeze or fawn but that's for another post!).
The sympathetic nervous system takes over, our heart starts pounding, we start sweating and in the moment, we determine whether we are going to fight or flee for our survival and safety.
We may experience PTSD where we are triggered by a sound, sight, smell, something that can bring our nervous system into the same response as if we were fighting or fleeing for our lives again.
The same response can happen after a little t trauma. These are also called developmental traumas or attachment traumas and they are much more challenging to recognize. These are not single events and rather repeated occurrences that can occur when we are in the developing stage as a child.
Our body still experiences the fight or flight state and our sympathetic nervous system is activated. We can also be triggered into this again and can be triggered often, so our body lives with the sympathetic nervous system being activated chronically- a chronic form of stress.
When we are in this state, our body cannot heal.
This is where the health implications come into play. These experiences can affect our physical health, mental health, emotional health and spiritual health.
These triggers may show themselves as snapping and yelling at our kids, losing it, not being able to handle hearing your little ones cry or have a tantrum, considering hitting our children, or placing everyone's needs before our own, especially as a Mom! These are our "inner Dragons" coming out!
And this is so important for all parents, moms, dads and their children!
To learn more about the connection between these experiences and how they show up as our inner dragons, listen in!
As parents we are in a unique position to directly change our children’s experiences and when we heal, our children heal too!
